Why I made it
Physical keyboards went from being the standard on phones to a clunky, retrofitted mix of hardware and software. The existing keyboard apps were okay, but nothing came close to the typing that was so common just a few years ago.
That reached a breaking point for me when a prototype QWERTY phone landed on my desk with no keyboard optimizations at all. So I decided to make my own. It turned out better than I ever imagined, so I added support for more phones and decided to share it with anyone who might enjoy it or benefit from it.
I've used these phones in their day, I use the modern ones now, and I've used just about everything in between. RetroType is built from that experience.
Who it's for
People who remember the good old days of physical keyboard phones, people who want a modern keyboard phone that types the way it should, or both.
What you can count on
- No tracking. RetroType doesn't monitor what you type or collect any data.
- No internet access. The app can't go online at all. Your words stay on your phone.
- No ads. Not now, not ever.
- Made by one person. Just me, with help from a small group of testers.
The Returning Retro way
RetroType is made in the spirit of Returning Retro: using technology intentionally instead of compulsively, and bringing back technology that should never have been left behind in the first place.
